I would like to know if anyone up north growing these two plants have any spring shoots yet. This has been a very unusual spring in that we had very warm temperatures quite early. People were in their shorts etc. and I went out and pruned my buddlieas and my Sheffield Pink mum as I usually do. We later had some freezing weather, even some snow, and now that it has warmed up again, there is no sign of new growth on any of these plants. Is it too early to give up on them? I am beginning to think that I was premature in cutting them back and killed them. Things are so unusual that I don't know whether they are late or not. What do you think?

my experience with buddiela ... however its spelled.. is that it is a short lived plant in northern z5 ... and i would not be surprised.. if your pruning .... had nothing to do with its demise .... and the same with mums.. some live forever.. the ones everyone have.. and some just dont make it ... i might suggest that the mild winter.. with.. in my case.. no constant snow cover.. allowed a mid winter thaw that caused problems ... you might give each 2 more weeks and then give up ... ken

Don't know anything about buddiela, but I have quite a few mums. Clara Curtis was visible as soon as the little snow we had melted. Some of my other hybrid mums are 8 inches tall. A few are just making an appearance. This is the way it goes every year. I would think Sheffield should be showing signs of something. Did you gently scratch around the base to see if anything is coming? Or another thing I do is gently tug on the old stems. If they pop out of the ground without a whole lot of effort and look dead, they probably are. Kevin

My poor Bud's kept all of their wood due to the mild winter, so will be enormous this year. But, they certainly suffered from the repeated April frosts/freezes. It would be warm or at least decent for a few days, they would push some new growth, then it would freeze off, then it would be warm again and more new growth, then another freeze. Lather, rinse, and repeat. Finally, it looks like they get to keep the latest batch of new growth, unless we have a late May surprise in the weather.

Thanks for the info. Ken, and I hope you are not correct. These Buddliea plants were grown from seed in 2008 and have bloomed beautifully for the three years since. I always mulch them heavily with chipped leaves and did not remove the mulch when I pruned them, hence I don't know if there was any growth at that time. What's left looks pretty dead so I'll wait a couple more weeks and see what happens. I may also do some digging around to see if there is anything 'green' underground. The Sheffield Pink is a new plant and last year was its first bloom. It was not mulched over winter because it is in my rock garden to add a little interest in late fall. I have also not dug around to see what's there but last year, it started re-growth the same time as my Callirhoe, which is doing very well right now. So, Kevin, I'll try popping it out and see what happens. Thanks everyone for your input. |

We had the same weather here as denninmi - lather, rinse, and repeat - that is so cute, but true. My Budds are very green now and I recenly pruned them back just a bit, due to their large size. I made it a point to never prune them back until I saw some healthy green growth somewhere on the plant, be it the limbs or at the base where it comes out of the dirt. It used to be as late as mid May here. But we keep having very mild winters now and some of mine tend to keep some green looking growth on them most of the winter - Climate Change???? Your Sheffields should be showing some green growth, but that being said, my Butterfly Weed did not show anything at all until late last week. I thought I had lost it after 5 years. I can't explain it because my next door neighbors is up 8 to 10 inches. Mine has NEVER been this late before. Keep the faith and look for new growth on your Sheffs and Budd. Good luck, Linda |

I went out today and tugged at and scraped all three plants. I think the Sheffield is gone because the remains were a little shaky, but perhaps the Buds are O.K. They are firmly in the ground so I'll wait for them bit more. Linda, like you, I had planted two sets of milk weed last year and thought they were lost until last week when I saw shoots. The 'little twigs' from last year almost got 'yanked', but then I remembered what I had planted there. I did not have one last year and missed the butterflies. I will miss the Buds. even more if they don't come back.

SURPRISE!!SURPRISE!! I gave up on my Buds. after a friend promised to root a couple for me but left the stumps there. Would you believe one of them has put out a shoot. June 18 and I can't believe it. I will top dress it with some compost and hope it 'leaps' and produces some blooms. The other stump still looks dead and the Mum is definitely dead. Just love those butterflies.

Please post back when (if?) your BB shows green next spring as I do wonder if such a late start implies difficulty for surviving this coming winter.

BBs are fickle...some may come up WAY later than others, even of the same cultivar it seems. We planted 100 rooted cuttings this spring, and I have some that are nearly 2' tall already and others that have one cluster of leaves-all in the same general area, and all from the same seller. I've heard they don't like to be moved, but I've moved them. They LOOK like they will die...but if you make sure to water them well and give them time, they bounce back-at least in my experiance. I got one free last year that was already 6-7' tall and well rooted. It looked terrible for a few weeks, the leaves were all crinkled and dead looking (this was mid-summer and HOT, probably the worst time to do it, but otherwise they were going to yank it and toss it). But it did come back, and it's back this year also. I moved another one this spring that we planted last year because it was in the way where it was and I wanted to put a rose there instead. Same thing-crinkled dead looking leaves for a few weeks, and now it looks fine.

Thanks for letting me know of your experience with these beauties ,Eclecticcottage. It seems that we must display utmost patience with them, but it is so worth it. Your experience will be very useful to me in the future, I'm sure. I am a newbie with these, these two being my first bushes which I winter sowed from seeds received in an exchange. I was rather thrilled that I had such success with my first attempt, and I was warned about not cutting them back until spring, but not about the fact that they take their sweet time showing up after their winter sleep !! Of course this one plant will be coddled, and I will know what to expect if we have such strange weather in a future spring.

I'd also make sure to dead head like it's a religion once it starts flowering. I did it with the 14 we put in last year and they were non-stop until frost. My Lo and Behold is covered in blooms that are just turning from green now already. I kind of do the opposite of coddling with them, except for making sure they get enough water when freshly planted, lol (well, and deadheading). I only trimmed one, and I tossed the two branches I cut into water to see if they'd root. Looks like they are-and I just made sure to keep the water full and fresh.
