heavy shade, moist, raised bed ... what to plant?

Raised bed on the north side of the house in northern lower Michigan. The bed is shaded by a large maple -- heavy shade all day. The bed is approximately 2ft deep by 12ft long. Bed stays quite moist.

Have tried some mini hostas and small hostas there but they have not thrived... more like just barely hang on. Other suggestions? Would like plants that wouldn't get more than a couple feet tall and slug resistant would be fantastic if there is such a beast.

If a Hosta won't grow there, I'd work on the soil. Something is definitely wrong. Some photos would be nice.

I'd also limb up the tree to let in light.

If it's shaded by a maple, I am surprise that it's moist. Perhaps because it's raised. How dim is the shade?

How long did you give for the hosta to be established. Small hostas are very slow growing and may take a while. You mentioned slugs, what's causing the current plant to fail?

I've learned that tree roots will grow up into things like compost piles and raised beds. Maybe tree roots are strangling the hostas?

Ferns will grow in heavy shade.
