Your ideas for some shade in a sunny garden

I have a full sun oval shaped perennial garden which is full of a variety of sun loving perennials, like Phlox 'David', several coreopsis, salvia, centranthus, etc. As they grow tall, by mid June or so, the north side has a lot of shade from the taller plants in the middle. I've tried alyssum, ageratum (annual)as border plants, but they get too much shade once the center plants really get growing. Any ideas? Perennials or annuals?

I have some sedum ternatum that seems to grow pretty well underneath some trees. However, it's a birch tree so the shade isn't that great. What kind of tree is it?

I find that variegated liriope does well in full sun or full shade, so it might fit the bill.

Why not move the tallest plants to the north side?

Creeping phlox might do well if that's not an idea you like.

There is no tree in this area, only perennials. I'd like the garden to look nice on all sides because it is in the central area of the yard, thus the reason for having the tall perennials in the center. At least these are my thoughts for now. Thanks.

Hostas? No garden should be without them!

Heucheras.

Heucheras can take some sun?

I'm sure they can in Zone 5. They can take some here but not as much as they can there.

How about daylilies? You may not get maximum amount of blooms, but you will get some.

I have 'The Fairy' groundcover roses that only get morning sun. They are in shade by 1:00 or 2:00 and they bloom wonderfully.

Another idea campanula 'Blue Waterfall'. I think it will not mind some shade.

Otherwise, I think your best bet is to focus on foliage. Jacobs Ladder 'Stairway to Heaven' or 'Touch of Class' are traditional shade plants, but I think they should do okay in some sun if the soil is rich and some irrigation takes place. Great foliage. Ditto Heuchera

Agreed on the Heuchera, and liriope is good if you want to do a border of some kind.

Hostas depend, I think on what kind of Hosta you end up with..some are really sensitive to any kind of sun, while others seem immune to sunburn!
