| X post from hydrangea forum. Last year, I planted 7 endless summer hydrangea around our 12ft octagon shape gazebo. I would like to plant a perennial between the hydrangeas. Two reasons, one is I would like some color before the hydrangeas bloom and second, I dont think the hydrangeas will grow big enough to take up all the space between. One side of the gazebo gets morning sun, the other side afternoon sun, so I need something that likes both sun and partial shade. Any suggestions? Thanks |

| Remember that foliage gives color, too, and since blooms last only weeks for most perennials, foliage becomes even more important. Some to try are heucheras, astilbe, brunnera 'Jack Frost,'(love this one), Polemonium 'Stairway to Heaven,' 9an absolute must for spring color), dianthus ('Firewitch' is a favorite blooming right now), hostas and hakone grass. Thinks foliage and texture, then bloom. Just my take on it. :))) |

| I have Hydrangeas, Peonies, Lilac, Weigela, Heucheras, Hostas, Rudbeckia, dwarf Crape Myrtle, Sambucus 'Black Lace', Hellebores, and lots of Clematis planted around my gazebo. I have color/blooms from early spring till frosts. I agree, colorful foliage is a very good solution. Also, try to add different texture.
