I know things are blooming early this year, but. . . .

I went outside this morning to find open blooms and lots of pending buds on my 'October Skies' aster and my 'Sunshine Blue' caryopteris. Um, are anyone else's perennials this far ahead of schedule? I haven't been pinching the aster back on purpose, hoping to see how prolific the bloom is without it. I have a 'Raydon's Favorite' nearby that I've been pinching, and nothing is amiss with it.

They're both typically September bloomers for me. Argh.

Even the Heleniums are blooming!

Yikes! I have only Mardi Gras, which blooms early anyway.

My first thought is that there's going to be nothing left to look forward to, but then again maybe we'll get to see a bunch of once-in-a-blue-moon bloom combos.

I have a bunch of early fall bloomers, too. But considering that it is still very early and I usually cut my asters and mums back for the last time of the season in July, I'm going to let them bloom, cut them back, fertilize them and let them start over and bloom a second time in the fall.

Sometimes if I don't cut them back, the mums bloom in the summer anyway and again in the fall.

That's what I was wondering--whether it's better to pinch off the aster blooms as if they didn't exist or let them bloom and then hope they start over. I'll probably just have to live with whatever decision the caryopteris is making. : ) Thanks, Sandy.

Many plants seem to be blooming about 2-3 weeks early. The Miss Kim lilac, peonies and Irises are definitely early as they don't usually start blooming until the first week of June.

I gave a lot of the perennials a haircut yesterday, including all the Asters, all the Solidago, Helianthus, a lot of the Phlox, Agastache, Monarda, etc. Sometimes trim off just half the tops, thinking this will extend the bloom season by staggering the blooms. I try to trim the perennials before they are starting to make flower buds.

I usually don't do this until June but they were getting big already!
