honeysuckle

I bought a HUGE honeysuckle last summer (the pot is about 24" diameter)-long story short it never got planted in the ground. I put it in the garage over the winter and just put it outside this week. I have 2 questions- did I hurt it badly by doing this?? I live in zone 6 and it was a long, cold winter! also do I need to cut back the woody old growth or will the whole thing "green-up" again? (there was a bit of green starting when I pulled it out of the garage)

RE: honeysuckle

this is one of my run it over with the truck plants ...

and even if you do that.. you can barely kill it ...

now.. why are you worried about pruning... why dont you get it in the ground???

prune it in late summer .... after others bloom ... let it get over the stress of transplant.. before you go removing food making leaves ...

RE: honeysuckle

It likely would have been better for it to have been planted last year, but if you see some green now it obviously didn't mind all that much ;-) Honeysuckles do grow off of last years "wood". But don't be shy about giving it a good pruning if you see a lot of dead/broken/damaged vine. Honeysuckles enjoy a hard pruning and will reward you with lots of new growth later on.

I typically don't trim mine unless to shape or remove broken branches.

I agree with Ken, just plant it, let it establish, and trim it up next year if necessary. Hummingbirds will love it.
