I'm such a good gardener!!

It's been windy the last couple of days and strong storms are suppose to push through this evening. So.......

Early this morning I staked all the tall bearded iris which are just coming into bloom. I hate iris on the ground which they would be without staking!

I also staked my Baptisia. I usually forget to do this until mid summer when again, strong winds always bend that huge mass of foliage all over the place and it looks really ugly. It's just getting ready to bloom, so the foliage is only about 2/3 its ultimate height and very upright - perfect for staking now. 3 stakes, a piece of twine and the job was done. By summer you won't even know they're there.

I love it when I'm ahead of the game!!

Kevin

It is really such a satisfying feeling to be ahead of yourself in the garden, very true! I use a peony support for my Baptisia every year and find that works too.

Congrats! I don't know if I've EVER been ahead of the game in the garden, lol. Good for you!

Clap clap!! Me too! :)

The front garden and xeric garden are almost caught up, those are in the front yard and most visible. I had to transplant in many new plants because of the severe losses from the voles. I started putting wire cages around some of the new perennials such as the Echinacea and Salvia Black & Blue since they were vole favorites. Also watered other vulnerable plants with a castor oil vole formula I learned about on the Hosta forum (it's working!).

Now lovely Irises, Baptisia, all sorts of Aquilegia and Digitalis, Miss Kim Lilac, and more are in early bloom in front. The peonies are budding and they have more buds than I've ever seen before. It is heavenly.

Now to get in the back yard and get cracking there!

I'm really looking for photos of these gardens that are ready for the growing season.... :-)

Congratulations! Someday I may experience that feeling but it probably won't happen while I'm taking care of a bed at church, another at our local Post Office and one at the county fairgrounds. Oh well, at least those beds are in good shape. lol

I can feel you smirking smugly when I tell you I was out yesterday staking up my yellow baptisia, in bloom & spread out all over the ground :) Every year I say I'm going to get out there & stake it up early. I even get so far as thinking about doing it in the spring. It would be so much easier to go ahead & do it before it flops all over other plants. The baptisia is right next to some Oriental lilies. The lilies don't look very happy now, but at least I didn't break any off. The baptisia looks really unnatural as you can imagine, would have looked so much better if I had done it when I should. I don't have this problem with my purple or white baptisia flopping.

Congrats & applause Kevin!! I'm right there with you--got my peonies & baptisia supports in well ahead of when the plants grew tall enough to need them. I have a number of both planted in various beds and fortunately was ahead of them for the first time this year. Several peonies I grew from bare-root plants have fat buds on them for the first time so I'm excited to see the blooms. Tags got lost years ago so they'll be a nice big surprise! Baptisia has been blooming for a week already along with columbine, perennial bachelor button, bleeding heart & brunnera.

I was just thinking this morning, that we are getting more done earlier this year and I think it was because we had a head start in the weather department in March. And everything that is growing is about 3 weeks ahead of schedule. I have my first rose opening and that doesn't usually happen until the first of June, so that is only 10 days early but other things were even earlier than that.

I was hoping I didn't come across as some smug jerk. Happy to see everyone has a good sense of humor.

ngraham - I'm not saying a word. I certainly wouldn't say: I TOLD YOU SO!! (snicker, snicker) What you described is exactly what I usually go through most years and I really wanted to avoid it this year. In addition, when that plant flops, it shades it's neighbors too much which becomes a huge problem.

gardenweed - Isn't it nice? I don't support my peonies because that's a job I really hate. Instead I make sure to pick everything in bloom if it's going to rain hard. It's a great excuse to have the flowers inside where I almost get high on the fragrance. I look forward to this every year.

prairiemoon - I completely agree. We are weeks and weeks ahead this year. I kind of wonder what that will do to the rest of the summer and fall season?

Yesterday was one of those almost perfect gardening days. It was hot, but I still managed to get everything done I wanted to. When the rain finally came last night, it came in buckets and the iris and baptisia are still very upright this morning.

Okay, you guys, I've had enough of all you good gardeners! I'm going over to the "lazy is good" thread - that's much more up my alley, lol!
