because of the unusually temperate weather I am finding that perennials that do not typically bloom until late summer are now getting ready to bloom and I am wondering if I cut them back will they then form new buds and bloom at their rightful time? One example is the sidalgo fireworks.

Yes, you can cut them back. For most perennials it will result in shorter plants with more but smaller blooms. I routinely cut solidagos back to control height and make bushier plants. It will delay bloom by about 2 to 3 weeks in my experience. For great info on this , look for a book "The Well Tended Perennial Garden" by Tracy DiSabato-Aust

We have had such strange weather in my area I am having the same experience. I decided to let everything do its thing. To get some blooms later in the season I started direct sowing some annuals seeds. My favorite for that purpose have been Zinnas and cosmos. My plants look weak as it is because of the weird weather I am just not going to stress them any further. We have had so little rain everything is budding early they look weak from all the dry weather. JMO

Glad to know that I can cut them back and they will still bloom albeit maybe smaller blooms....this is also true of Boltonia which gets so darn tall and then flops over....I just cannot stake all the tall perennials that I have and that refuse to remain upright and perky!

This is a year of surprises for sure. My Mums are blooming. Still getting used to gardening in the south, but I'm pretty sure it was well into June when they started last year. I don't like to be too dictatorial to my plants, more of a caring observer, just enjoying the show. Pass the popcorn!

Mums can be affected by weird weather. Last year my mums were fully budded in June. I contacted the grower and they told me to cut them back hard - don't just pinch the buds off. Did that and they bloomed when they were suppose to - in autumn. I don't like plants blooming out of season. It messes with my head. Kevin
