Saponaria ocymoides - Rock Soapwort problems??

I was told DO NOT put this in your garden as it "seeds out big time & grows aggressively underground" and is the LAST thing you want in your garden.

Comments??? My plan was to have it flowing over the wall of my butterfly garden.

grinder, I would like the answer to this too, since I have Saponaria ocymoides along my rock edge. I did a google search and found information about Saponaria officinalis being invasive, see below. I don't see that caution about the ocymoides. If anyone else has a different experience it would be great to hear about it now, since it is in it's first season blooming right now. [g]

I had soapwort at our other house, but sadly I don't have any idea which one.

It was a beautiful ground cover for me. It would spread and grow very quickly for three years, then it would be gone and I'd have to replace it - I did this two or three times. Never had any trouble with seeding (but I always mulched). I thought it was absolutely stunning in spring, covered in pink blooms. It was a better-looking plant than phlox IMO, but bloom time and habit was similar. Seems like it may have bloomed right after the phlox...anyway, I just loved it and I would definitely not characterize mine as aggressive. YMMV. :)

Yes, it died. I bought some more seeds, and meant to start them this year. It looked very nice cascading down a microscopic stone retaining wall, but certainly wasn't persistant.

I love this plant. Mine behave more or less like connietn's do, but some have been with me for a lot longer than three years. They do well in sun or light shade and cascade beautifully. The color is a soft, slate pink that goes well in my garden.

The plants will set a frightening amount of seed, but I always cut them back hard after blooming, don't compost the trimmings, and mulch a lot. I get a few, welcome volunteers, but they are not at all a problem.

It sounds like maybe your info is on S. officinalis, which I have never grown.

I have this in my garden (from seed) and it comes back each year, gets bigger and wider, but is no bigger than 3 feet across after 4-5 years? It cascades nicely...and still looks good not blooming. This is year late but in case someone looking for info.
