| In my in-law's yard is a row of day lilies with tall orange flowers. Right now, growing in front of them is a bunch of weed. What they like to do is to grown some perennials in front of the day lilies. The area gets full sun for part of the morning to early afternoon. What would you suggest that are long blooming? So far, I think:
Balloon flowers, gaillardia, Coneflowers, Black eye Susans, cat mint, salvia, sedium.
Actually, catmint may get too tall. I thought of Astibe, but thought it would fried from the sun. Don't want to use other type of lilies since they look too much like day lilies.

| I'd pick something blue......I just like the color contrast :-) One of the perennial salvias like May Night or Caradonna would be wonderful, bloom most of the summer and would be very showy against the daylily backdrop. |

| I would mix in something with really dark leaves, like Heuchera "Obsidian" and something else, like Lewisia with hot pink or coral-y rose flowers to really POP! |

Nepeta 'Junior Walker' would be nice. It's 1/3rd the height of 'Walker's Low.' Echinacea 'Pow Wow Wild Berry' - stays compact and has intense color. The good thing about the Nepeta is it blooms all summer. It also is so hardy! |

| I like white with orange daylilies, sort of a creamsicle color scheme. I have planted white Annabelle hydrangeas and elderberries behind the old-style orange daylilies, and I think foamy white flowers or almost white in front would look great also. The annual candytuft, Alyssum, has white flowers. Perennials might include white campanulas, white liatris/gayfeather, some of the hardy geraniums or caryopteris snow fairy, white dicentra, white or creamy daffodils, white lilies. Since that particular variety of daylily has a relatively short bloom period, you want other flowers which will bloom for as long as you can get. I think you've got great other suggestions. Contrasting foliage (size, shape, and color) will add long-term interest. Flowers in the blue-purple range would be a fun combination. I also am thinking back to various warm colored borders that have been posted on here, with gold, yellow, and red along with orange - great combinations. I do know several gardeners who like pink and orange, but it's a bit intense for my taste. What do your inlaws like? |

| I must have the Nepeta Junior Walker. Bought it as 'Walkers Low' at a sale at my son's elementary school 8 years ago and it's survived with total neglect in the xeric garden. Barely gets more than 6-8 inches tall and I always thought and wished it would get taller. It is clearly a durable perennial and the purple would probably look good with orange dayliles. |

| Another good thing about Nepeta is cuttings are easy to root. It would save a lot of money if that's an issue. |

| I'm in a different zone... Right now, my geranium 'Rosanne' is blooming at the same time and in front of a grouping of daylilies. Your zone is too cold for salvia farinacea 'Victoria Blue' but that is also blooming in my combination. I have a potted hosta sitting in the grouping of lily foliage and sedum 'Green Expectations' in the front edge. I pinch off the sedum tips and plant to keep spreading it around. Soon, the short echinacea 'Pow Wow Wild Berry' will be blooming. This is all backed by a hedge of roses. A white salvia greggii and phlox 'David' provide a bit of white to go with the white edges of the hosta. Cameron |

| I like yellow with orange. The Gallo Yellow Gaillardias or even one with reddish/orange would look nice with the daylilies and are not too tall. A coreopsis might also look nice or even something lower growing like potentilla. Also consider Ozark Sundrops (Oenothera missouriensis) -- a bright yellow that blooms until fall or Oenothera fruticosa 'Cold Crick' which is more upright with tons of bright yellow flowers throughout late spring into mid-summer. |

For example my 'Rozanne' is a bloom machine (like everyone else's) but I wont see its first flower for at least 3 more weeks. (Last year it first flowered right around July 1st but that spring was quite cool...unlike this year). |

| I sorted through the answers and think I am going to do the following plants: Balloon flowers Sentimental Blue Heuchera "Obsidian" or something similar gaillardia Catmint The problem is I am having some problems arranging this. The blue and yellow go together well enough, but where to fit the heuchera? Paul |
