Should my dinnerplate hibiscus have leafed by now ?

all I have is a bunch of dried up sticks, no signs of
leaves.
It has been so warm here and all my other plants are out
and about so wondering if this one is gone for good.

I transplanted it this spring(it was dormant) to a prime location in my garden bed so I would like to replace it right away if I have to.

Thanks
Usha

If you're talking about Disco Belle or something similar, it's possible it hasn't broken dormancy, but it probably should have already - maybe not. I think mine finally started growing about a week ago, but when I transplanted it a few weeks before that there was clear evidence it was sprouting. It just takes a very long time for these to show themselves above ground.

You could carefully scratch around the dead stems and see if there is anything coming. Just be careful.

stay away from them for another couple weeks.. mine are just barely out ...

except for that short very hot end of march ... april and half of may were very cold.. enough that the soil probably did not warm to depth ...

patience!!!

ps: or they are dead.. lol ... and digging and scratching isnt going to do anything ...

Usually my perennial hibiscus don't emerge until early June. They are just poking up now, about 2-3 inches tall, which is earlier than normal, but everything is earlier than normal by far.

I live in zone 7b where it's been hotter than normal for weeks - and mine are barely a few inches tall. I would give it more time before giving up on it.

Most of mine are earlier than usual this year, but I have a couple that are just starting to poke through - this is the time they normally begin showing themselves. I would give it another approx. two weeks - if no signs of life by then, then I would replace.

BTW: Don't forget to pinch when a full set of leaves emerges. :0)
