This is sprouting in the midst of my basil. We took a plot that had Barry bushes that were only good for birds (mostly suckers) a sapling, old, gangly rose bushes, and just plain old weeds. I had tried to see if I could get the vines to produce and revive the rose bushes, but nothing came of them. Over a period of years, we dug this area out and enlarged it. We got the rose bushes out by the root as well as the tree. The area around it had been grassy so nothing really was growing like this. We turned and filled and amended. I was weeding today in the basil and found this. I was wondering if anyone had a guess as to what it is.

i dont get the green shoot... is it related???? and the red is out of focus... i suggest you give it a week or two.. to more fully develop.. and pop us a better pic ... not quite so straight down .. and a scale might help ... just anything in your pocket we all might recognize ... ken

The red is a Rubus. The green appears to be a bit of stray grass. Out of focus is often a problem but Rubus shoots are pretty unmistakable. Especially with the background info that there were 'Barry' bushes there before.

Yes this does look more like a berry now ( sorry for the autocorrect above). Considering that these did not produce well before, would you just dig up and be rid of it or replant elsewhere?
|
By all means dig it up. I like to get my hand under it and if possible pull up the whole root. Anything left will grow again. Al
