This last December, inspired by GWers, I had alot of fun creating 2 decorative outdoor urns for the winter. Into each of my 2 cast iron urns I set a big pot of dirt (to anchor them) and then stuck in it lots of cuttings, watered, and sprayed the rhodo branches w/ anti-dessicant. See the red stems and yellow stems(Cornus alba Ivory Halo and Acer negundo Winter Lightning)? Well, we had a LOT of snow cover on those urns this winter and come March, they were still looking pretty good, so I let them stay til spring. A week ago, I went out to dismantle them but lo and behold, the cornus and acer cutting were all sprouting!! I know i took off bottom branches so these would fit tightly in the pots, but I had no idea they would survive/root/sprout like the ridiculously-easy-to-propagate willow genus. Hooray!!!

| That is great. I did the same thing this winter. I did not do them in a pot I have a raised garden bed that I use as a nursery holding area that I have built the soil up with compost and a bag of Miracle Gro garden soil. 2 Purple Smoke bushes All of these were done with pieces that I was clipping to shape the bushes. I did not think it would work but I figured they were going to be trashed I may as well see if they will root. To my amazement everything rooted. |

| Yes. I just cut the limbs and stuck them in the ground. No rooting hormone or anything. These are the monster Rhodies in front of the house. LOL |
| That's a nice surprise! I rooted several dogwood cuttings over winter last year, and they had a great success rate. I'd like to try to do a nice winter container like yours this year. |
| Yeah, I put some redtwig dogwood into a block of oasis in a porch pot for the holidays some years back. It looked good, so it sat there all winter. When I went to pull it out in late April roots were shooting out the sides of the oasis block. So, I just planted it. |

| (as we are known for saying here in MA): WICKED good :-) you win the prize so far- No Soil!! That even trumps my experience a few yrs back- of laying thick salix branches on the ground- as a path edge- and the branches sprouted !! best, mindy www.cottonarboretum.com/ |

| That is a good idea. I will try it this winter. I read that it is easy to root Heuchera in the floral foam kept moist. |
