maries1120, I have Deutzia gracilis 'Nikko' planted with Amsonia as well as a chocolate joe-pye weed. Makes a nice combo.

Thanks. That sounds like a nice combo. How high does your chocolate joe pye-weed get? The perennial nursery here lists it as 60" but Perennial Resource lists it at 3-4'. Does one get about 2-3' wide? I see you are in NH. I've been there visiting friends - beautiful state! I can't wait to go back.

I have Eupatorium 'Chocolate'. It's gorgeous, but it rarely thrives more than 1 season for me here. And it's usually not taller than 3 feet, since our growing season is so short.

So, if you choose the plant, buy it from someplace with a 2 year guarantee. It's usually not a cheap one, and since it dwindles, it's not worth $20 for what is bascially an annual or biennial.

30" tall sounds about right. It gets about 2' wide or so. I've never had any issues with it coming back here in NH. One of mine has been in for about 8 years. Sometimes an early frost will nip the flowers, but I grow it more for the foliage.

Baptisia 'Blueberry Sundae' is a more compact Baptisia. I love Baptisias and Amsonias together. They always bloom together.
