May Night Salvia question

I was curious as to why my May Night Salvia that I planted a few weeks ago isn't blooming now? I selected this plant because I read it was one of the longest blooming perennials. It was blooming at the top of the stalks for a couple of weeks....the blooms wouldn't last long though, only a day or two it seemed. But I haven't seen any new blooms for at least a week now. I have even deadheaded the spent blooms too. The plant itself seems OK, as the bottom leaves are nice a green and aren't showing any signs of trouble. Are there long periods between blooms with this plant normally?

It takes a lot of energy for a plant to bloom and if it was just recently planted it's probably putting it's energy into grow new roots. Think the sleep, creep, leap rule whenver you plant perennials. The first year the plant appears to sleep as it's busy getting established under ground, the next year growth appears to creep and the third year it leaps.

| I purchased mine last year, it got tall and bloomed, and this year I have it in a container and you can see, it's started blooming

Do you actually cut off the stalks after they are done blooming? Or do you just remove spent flowers, and new ones grow on the existing stalks?

bgaviator, which method is correct - removing the entire stalk, or just the spent blooms off the stalk?

Cut off the stalk, but be careful not to cut too low, since the secondary blooms will be lower down on the same stem.
