That's pretty impressive. They don't grow that large or have such lush flowers in my garden, so I don't have any trouble pulling them out. Yours -- i'm not so sure. Perhaps a stay of execution at least until they threaten to go to seed. Jan |

It's only a weed if you don't want it...

I agree - I wouldn't yank it till it starts to go to seed. It's very pretty! Dee

I don't know what kind of weed that is, but it's pretty. Sure looks happy in that spot.

It's an Oxalis and it's not just the seeds which are the problem. There will be tiny bulbils forming under the plant and if Ken moves any of the soil from that area to some other part of the garden he will have Oxalis coming up all over the place. Whether that is a problem or not is a matter of opinion. That's probably how it got there in the first place - with some imported soil, maybe on a transplant. If it is left undisturbed it is less likely to spread.

yes its pretty.. but its potential 200 billion progeny are not.. lol ... that soil hasnt been disturbed for 10 years ... but for mulch.. and its right under the pine.. i favor bird dispersion .. this is the beauty of the digital camera.. i can enjoy this forever.. w/o leaving it there.. lol .. ken

Glad my Oxalis are pink! Eye of the beholder... Does anything NOT grow well in your yard?

but you could have the Ranunculus repens that invaded my back forty and is getting into the lawn... gorgeous in bloom, but OMG, what a thug!!

It doesn't LOOK like a weed. Very nice clump. Mine are always just little sprigs, lots of them, but they're easy to pull compared to most things. It's not one that makes me say dirty words. I have a couple "too bad it's a weed" plants that snuck into my shrub row I need to deal with. One is Japanese Honeysuckle and of course it smells heavenly right now. I've killed it three years in a row and it just keeps getting bigger. The other is a mulberry tree that somehow got big enough to bear fruit without me noticing it. I don't usually like wild mulberries but these are very tasty. Mulberry has a taproot and they're hard to pull even when they're little and very hard to kill if they come up where you don't want them. I'll trade either of those for your weed. : ) |

Yeah, well, call it a weed if you want. At the garden centers that sell "Proven Winner" branded annuals, they call it $3.95 a pot. It's the same basic thing -- a yellow flowering oxalis with either green or burgundy foliage, and it looks exactly like the common weed.

Good thing it didn't come up in my yard. I would've kept it and had to deal with billions later. I wish I would have known not to let the volunteer with cute leaves stay on in my lower bed. I'm still pulling out motherwort many years later.

At my old location we had lots of it. Every year I had an argument with my wife when I pulled it out. Her complaint" the only dam thing blooming in the garden and you pulled it out"! I explained, I just could not resist the urge. Al

I planted oxalis like this for salads, I LOVE it for eating and garnish, and so do my family and friends now. It has spread and dispersed only a little in three years, which is good -- I do sort of live in fear that one or two things I plant will take over and make me miserable. This could happen with oxalis, I know. I find it grows tall and lush like this for me in areas where there is a little shade, maybe it just gets "leggy" and I like how that looks. Friends have asked me to pot some and give it to them, which I have been doing with the admonition to be careful about spread...

That's a really, really close up photo of clover. Clover fowers are pretty, but you had better pull it before it spreads. BTW daisies, violets, and giant sunflowers are also weeds...technically. But they are not noxious. |

ah, I would love this oxalis - I pay good money for the little Chilean autumn flowering one (name escapes me, as it so often does) - we only get the horrid little bronze leaved things with minuscule flowers....everywhere - a terrible nuisance. Our equivalent in the UK are celandines (ranunculus ficaria) - although I just ignore mine and they are gone by midsummer

I will happily trade my wild violets, thistles and whatever that incredibly prolific four-foot weed with the chrome yellow flowers is (and of which I need to yank about 50 out of my subtropical bed before planting), for oxalis.

drove by it yesterday.. while mowing.. its ugly as heck.. apparently.. i hit it on its sublime minute of life ... soon to die ken
RE: too bad its a weed

| Here is my too-bad-it's-a-weed:
I spent about an hour yesterday removing a profusion of this plant from an ornamental bed. It's relatively shallow-rooted, but the stems on bigger plants are hollow and when you attempt to yank it, it often breaks off near the base instead of pulling out of the soil, so additional spadework is needed. Another week or two of inattention and I'd have had loads of seed to deal with. |

eric: roundup would alleviate a bunch of hard work .. ken
RE: too bad its a weed

Ken: I seldom use Roundup, and never in an ornamental bed where it could possibly drift onto adjacent, valuable plantings.

Thanks! I was wondering what this is. So...it is bad if I don't pull it now? It grows short and as a ground cover for me...I like it.

carolinaflowerlover, if you don't think this native (Oxalis stricta) is a weed, it's not. plantingman, "daisies, violets, and giant sunflowers" are generic terms with virtually no meaning, and each of these names can refer to native plants.

Thanks, purple! I will let it be for now. I have decided columbine is bordering weed for me. After trying to control it in a smaller box (half of 7 or so feet by 2 or so feet), I pulled it all out today. I put it on top of my dog's grave (who died 5 years ago today)...I hope it likes it there, so it can be free!

You're welcome. I hope so too!
