| Hi perennial forum. This is my first post here. I usually post in the houseplant, mid-Atlantic, and palm forums.
I divided and was given perennials and I planted them all around the mailbox and down the road so hopefully the view from my house will be full of flowers! The plants I planted were: 17 Daffodil bulbs (wrong time of year to plant but was given them so beggars can't be choosers :) Daylilies (the common small yellow kind and an expensive kind with peach coloured blooms from a division from an Aunt. I may plant some of my common tawny/ditch lilies also) Spiderwort (native to my area but this specific plant is from my Great Aunt in Georgia) Siberian & Bearded Iris (not sure of bloom colours) Gladiolus bulb (only one small clump and the main sprout was slightly damaged, hopefully it will live) Pink, white, and lavender coloured tall garden phlox (transplanted from my side yard, they are great and native!) White Easter Lilies (never grown true lilies but these were given from my Grandma. They just finished blooming this year but I think they were forced to bloom for the Easter season.) Black eye susans (some from an Uncle in Virgina and my Great Aunt in Georgia, leaves look slightly different from eachother but it's unclear if they are different varieties or just different previous growing conditions) Hosta ventricosa (these seed and spread like weeds here! I love them. planted a few small ones since I have s surplus) Rose of Sharon (planted behind mailbox/plants to serve as a natural barrier between the wild woodland/forest across the street and the roadside garden I'm creating. They too spread by the hundreds from seed!) I may plant a few more plants if I have get more. I'm hoping they all kind of naturalize and blend to have an array of blooms. What do you guys think about my selection? Do you think this will workout and look nice? It's been a weeks or two since I planted them all and they all seem to be adapting nicely. I think the recent rains have helped them. Do you guys think salt in the winter from will harm these plants? T.J. |
Follow-Up Postings:
|
| There are a couple of hardy glads. Do you have the hardy glad? I planted a hardy glad at my mailbox one year and it only lasted 3 yrs. The 4th yr it did not come back. All the other plants sound good. |
|
| Marquest- I'm not sure what kind of glad it is. All I know is I was given it last year in the mid of summer. It kinda withered away and then it sprouted up this year with a few extra smaller sprouts. I should have said corms instead of bulbs. Maybe yours didn't come back because your in zone 5. I think most glads are zones 9-7 but who knows. T.J. |

| Sounds great! You should post some photos so we can admire your new bed too. :) One thing I wondered about: How large is this bed? Rose of Sharon can get pretty big. The other reason I wonder is, common ditch lily spreads rapidly, so I might be worried about it overtaking your other daylilys. |
|
| I can try to post a few pics soon. Right now it doesn't look like much. I just kind of planted all of these plants with a foot or 2 of space in between without any patterns. I'm not sure what the technical term for a bed of plants describes. I was going for a more natural random look. Anymore plants I get I will just plant further along the roadside (still in front of my house). In front of my house across the street is a federal tree farm. It's composed of the typical hardwoods for a mid-Atlantic area (some southeastern trees and some northeastern trees). I would just be planting the Rose of Sharons in and just barely in front of the tree line so I don't think it will take up too much space. On the ditch lily comment- That was my hesitation. I know the others will spread but they are ridiculous! I think I will hold off and see how the other plants spread out first. I may plant some Gerbera daisies my Mother was given for Mother's day but I'm not sure if they would survive the winter. I have read they can take down to 11 degrees and we get into the single digits every few years. Maybe heavy mulch for the winter would be enough to tide them over. I am so happy about the way these plants rebounded after transplanting. I may be seeing some blooms before the year is over! I see pictures in the future! |
|
| I particularly enjoy plants I've gotten from friends and family. Beyond their beauty they have sentimental value as well. |
|
| I agree nhbabs! My friends and family are great! They are also so willing to share their treasures in the form of plants. I'm looking forward to receiving mums and true tiger lilies (Lilium lancifolium) from my Bubby (yiddish for great/grandmother). I hope the weeds I dug up while planting don't comeback from the roots! I want my plants to have a chance to spread. I love the anticipation of blooms. Some of my plants (like the glads) I don't know what colour they will be. About the glads and peach/salmon daylily - I asked my aunt what variety they are she will get back to me by the weekend! I'll let you guys know. This has been a lot of work the past 2-3 weeks (almost an every other day thing) but it is certainly a labor of love. I do wish people wouldn't drive past me honking and laughing at me almost once a day (the days I'm planting across the street). Regard to all! PS- will try to have some pics posted by the weekend. |

| Update! I'll be taking some pictures tomorrow. I just picked up some used tulip bulbs (for free).I don't expect much from them but there is no harm in planting them. I also planted an offset of a Common Columbine plant (from a friend). I hope that survives and spreads. I don't know much about them. So far everything seems to be growing within just days of planting. I have planted at least 20 plants and I haven't lost any and I only watered twice! T.J. |

| Oh, that is going to look absolutely marvelous! Can't wait to see more pics as everything grows up and blooms!! |
|
| I hope so also cyn427. I learned the root I planted is from a dogbane plant. If anyone has experience with that I would love to hear! I have read it is invasive. Should I not plant it with the others? T.J. |

| Absolutely amazing! That is what I was picturing in my head when I planted these. Do you have any info on this garden? Like how long it took for the plants to reach that size and mesh together? Thanks for the pictures! T.J. |

| I talked with her about five years ago when she just had a couple hundred feet planted. She just keeps adding more perennials every year. She has a lot of hostas planted under the conifers across from her house and she is even starting to plant the ditch across the road. These pictures don't really give it justice, Frank |

| I wonder if I'm creating a hazard by causing distractions to drivers or inviting bees near my mailbox. I bet the mail man won't be to pleased with me lol. The main issue I'm seeing with the plants now are weeds. I would mulch to fix that in a normal bed but I don't want to slow down any spreading or make the bed look unnatural (which I think some people do the way they use mulch). I pull a few of the largest weeds every time I get my mail but I don't think that will be enough. T.J. |

| I don't know whether anyone mentioned this: I would refrain from the ditch lily for another reason, they can spread the wild ditch lily disease to your expensive hybrids. |
