It's not that she's not inclined to keep the dog out, its that she didn't want anyone to state the obvious, as you so eloquently did anyway! Wish we had one of those buzzers that we could buzz when there was a "duh" moment!

Keep the dog and watch the tree, it will probably bounce back for you! If it happens again (on accident), I would immediately soak the area with the water hose to dilute the worst of it, assuming there isn't anything else around that you don't want it getting to via runoff. Happy gardening!

You have plus/minus eight hours after contact to rinse the plant off.
So hose it in the morning and in the evening and it will be good.
A small wire cage around the base of the plant will keep the dog from getting close enough to water it directly. This can be done tastefully and discreetly if it bugs you.

I keep a lovely yard with dogs that weigh more than I do, and when they pee they pee- up as high as three feet. It's all about restricting access and planting smart.

Cear, that made me laugh outloud! This little guy is only about 20 pounds. We do keep him out of there, but goodness gracious dogs can be persistent. No idea what makes this particular bush so attractive. It's just a pee magnet.
