Hepatica - why do animals hate it?

In a bare spot in the shaded area of my yard, I planted some celandine poppies. It does well, so I planted a few hepatica. It grows pretty well for a while and then one day all of the leaves are ripped up and one or two are dug out.

The next year, some of the ripped up hepatica returned, but after a few days the leaves are ripped off the stems again. None of the other plants are affected. Why the hate :-)?

The ripped up hepatica returned again, I am thinking of putting a chicken wire dome over it and hope that it will discourage the animals. It's suppose to be growing during the spring season, but now the area is leaved up. Can I put a growing light on top of it to help it out?
