Vinca minor 'Ralph Shugert' & Bowles Variety

Can someone please tell me if this is an annual or perennial?

I planted it in a tall urn to trail over the side. When first planted, it had pretty purple flowers. Now I just have long vines without flowers. Does this mean they aren't getting enough sun? Does it just bloom in the spring? Do I need to prune them back a bit? I have it planted in 2 urns with Sarcacocca. One on the northwest side of the house and the other is planted on the northeast side of the house.

The other thing I would like to know is, if I cut it back a bit (it's getting long and scraggly looking) can I plant what a snip off and plant it in the ground in my perennial garden? Will it grow there?

I'm in zone 8b, British Columbia.

Thank you for your help.

Vinca minor is perennial. In my climate it does tend to flower largely early in the year and then stop. It does not need a particularly sunny position. And yes, you can use any bits you trim off as cuttings. If you grow it in the ground it will root along the runners anyway.

But you need to know something about the habit of Vinca minor before you plant it in open ground. Read the discussion at the link.

Flora's valid concerns aside, Vinca minor is a very manageable and attractive shade groundcover for the PNW. It IS an aggressive spreader so keep that in mind when choosing a location but it is not considered invasive here and I have never seen it invade natural areas although I'd avoid planting it immediately adjacent to any. It is vigorous and it is evergreen so mixing it with smaller, more delicate perennials is not ideal......better with more robust perennials or as underplanting for trees and shrubs. And it is a wonderful container plant ;-)
