What do grow with plants that die back?

Posted by paulsiu IL (My Page) on

Last year, I planted some tulip and daffodils. They bloom well enough, but then die back during the summer. I think the same thing will happen with bleeding hearts and virginia bluebells. Their die back leaves an empty spot.

What can we do about this? In one part of my yard, the previous owner had grown some sweet woodruff. It covers up the area that the bulbs use to occupy. It does not appear to choke out the bulbs, but who knows. What's the best plant to cover up die back in the sun? What about in the shade?

In the shade I have Virginia bluebells growing between some hostas. By the time the bluebells are finished, the hosta is nearly full size and the empty space gets blocked from view. Same with bleeding heart--the hostas on either side and behind it grow up and cover where it's growing and the Japanese sedge grass hides it from view in front.

In full sun, I have monarda/bee balm, agastache/anise hyssop, tall phlox, ladybells, lupine and balloon flower planted where the spring bulbs come up. The bulb foliage goes dormant just as the perennials are sending up new growth so it only looks untidy for a week or two.

Also good around sunny bulb plants are anything that "bushes" out--peonies, daylilies, many geraniums, nepetas, etc.

I mask dying daffodil foliage with daylilies and ornamental grasses.

i tended to plant shallow rooted annuals like petunia or impatiens ... off center about 6 inches ... to fill voids ...

planting anything with large roots too close.. usually ended up harming what was below ... usually when i went brain dead and caused some harm ...

also.. things like forget-me-nots can fill voids as the ramble around the bed ... annual poppy.. etc ... larkspur ...

I plant bulbs amongst the perennials and they all seem to work harmoniously together. In the front yard I have some orange heirloom parrot tulips that poke up from under a gold hosta. Kind of funny, but a lady coming to a yard sale I had a couple weeks ago thought the hosta was producing those big orange flowers!! Lol.

With perennials I often try and layer them in the garden so that a plant that looks ratty or dies back after spring blooming will be hidden by something that blooms/gets bigger later or looks good all the growing season.
