Identifying some possible plant or weed

Posted by paulsiu IL (My Page) on

Don't laugh, but I often have trouble figuring out if what's coming out of the ground is something I planted. To make things worse, some of the stuff wasn't even planted by me.

Here are two plants growing out of my bed. I can't identify them

plant1
plant2

Can anyone tell me wha they are?

Thanks.

Paul

Not sure about the first, but the 2nd looks like a baby common Buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica). Very invasive shrub/small tree if that's what it is, spread around by birds who eat the berries.

The first is a weed as well, but I don't know what it is called. It will seed around everywhere if you let it go since the fluffy seeds float around.

I looked around my garden and realize there are tons of the two weeds. The first was hiding in the cardinals flowers bed. I didn't notice them because they look very much alike (cardinal flowers have thinner and longer leaves). On the plus side, they were easiy to pull out.

The buckthorns on the other hands are a mega-pain to pull out. I had to use a piler for some of them.

Yes, get those buckthorn while they are small, if possible! A neighbor has them growing through their hedge. I have to pull up hundreds of seedlings a year! If they get too tall, well, you know...
