ajuga from seed?

I'm just wondering if anyone has planted ajuga from seed successfully. Does the seed require a cold period before planting? I just ordered 400 seeds. I posted this on the groundcover forum, but got no response. Any tips or advice? Thank you!

Mine has spread on its own from seed into my lawn.

That being said, propogation from division is much simpler and they're nearly fool proof if you can get your hands on a clipping.

Lisa, growing instructions can be viewed at the link below. You can probably get more information from the source of your seeds...where did you buy them?

I have no experience with growing Ajuga from seed although I know mine drops seeds if I'm not careful to deadhead spent blooms. A gardening friend gave me a few small starts years ago and I have them growing in a number of beds. Very easy to transplant. Tough little plants and so pretty when in bloom in April.

Good luck!

Thanks for your replies. I do have it in other gardens and plan to transplant some. However, the area I want to cover is very big...maybe 70'x60'. I cleared the area of weeds, brush, etc but they keep trying to come back, so I want to get the ajuga to fill in as quickly as possible. Thanks for the link. Lisa

The weeds and brush certainly won't be choked out by Ajuga, if that's your plan. And an area that huge would be better served with a mix of groundcovers.

By far the easiest way to control that big an area is to mow it. Anything else is going to need regular weeding to hand pull or cut the brush.

I don't know. I think it might be a good idea and one that I might use, as well. Ajuga does make a very think and impenetrable mat in my flowerbed. So much so that seedlings and little plants have a hard time growing up through it.

You will still have to pull a few weeds, like you would with any mulch, but it's a good idea, if you can get it to fill in and get thick quickly enough.

Hmmm....Something I might think about doing in a few areas too... I'm tearing it out and tossing handfulls of it now.
