Aborted buds

What are the possible causes of what looked like healthy flower buds on L regale earlier this year gradually shrivelling and dropping? We had a very dry April. Could that cause flowers to abort?

Sorry - this was meant to go to the Lily Forum. Still, if anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Yes, moisture is key in Lily flower developement and a primary cause for bud abortion. Consider the relative tissue size/amount in single and then several buds/flowers that typically develop on a single stem.

I've seen this for the first time on some of my tall bearded iris. I was wondering if too much rain was to blame, since we had 25 days of rain in April, and quite a bit in May too.

Thanks , coolplantsguy. As I suspected. Lack of moisture in a British spring is not something we usually have to contend with!

flora, lack of moisture in the spring is quite common here. This year is the exception, If you look at any US temperature map today you will see that northern California has the lowest temperatures in the country. So far this year we have rarely reached 70 degrees and for the last month it has managed to rain everyday, as it is right now. Al

RE: Aborted buds

"March winds and April showers bring forth May flowers" we learned as kids. But this year no April showers.
