Four o clocks not opening, why?

I have four o clocks all over in many different varieties. I have white, red, purple, multicolored and yellow. Every single one is blooming except the yellow. Everywhere I have yellow planted they are not opening. Big healthy flower just sits there closed all the time. I forced two to open and they look beautiful but will not open on there on. What in the world could be wrong with the yellow that would be causing this? Anyone ever had this happen? Please advise on what I can do.

Is it maybe opening late night. I had a pink one that only opened when it was pitch black outside. LOL. I happened to be walking the dog in that area one night and smelled it and looked over in that direction and saw they were opened. The next evening they were closed. In the area you have them planted is there a bright street light? I also had a spot light over one that did not open.

They could be the same variety, because some are in partial shade, some in full sun and no matter the location they're not opening. I'm not going to worry myself with it. Its been a week they have been doing this. I'm coming close to just cutting them down. For me it's a waste, I want an open flower, not just a closed flower that probably won't produce seed.

Well I checked the past two nights, even as late as 1-4 am. Always closed. Any other ideas as to what may be causing this before I cut them down?

This is quite an unusual problem and wish I knew the answer. Do us a favor and let us know what the exact name of the plant is so we can avoid it. The reason may be as Ken suggested: a weird plant with bad genetics. If you find out what the answer is, let us know. Try a good garden center. Often there's someone there with a degree who can answer tricky problems.

I have the same problem with yellow ones. I would guess genetics also because they are spread from other plants, not planted by me. I'm going to cut mine down as well.

Funny, none of my four o'clocks are opening EXCEPT the yellow one. I don't think it's genetics. Last year I had some deep pink ones and white ones opening, and this year they are not (but the yellow ones are). I ordered three different types and planted them in another spot--and none of them are opening, though they are covered with blooms. I'm hoping they will all start opening. Or maybe I should pull them all out except for the yellow ones . . . I would like to solve this mystery! Bill

IME with them in different places, they just like to wait until they cool off, although others have testimonials in direct contradiction. This same question comes up every few years. Maybe some plants just have off-years? Starting to think so and castorp's plants seem to support that. But there's absolutely no reason to keep a plant you don't like. I try to give them away over killing them, though.
