| Hi, I just started planting perennials so I have a general question. I live in Southeast PA. Now that it is the end of June, is it too late to plant perennials? I hear that many plants have trouble in the heat. (It can get up to 97 degrees in the southeast PA area). I would like to plant bushes (Hydrangea), ground cover, maybe some arborvitae or leland cypress, and flowers from Lowes or wildflower seeds. I am told I could wait till fall for the trees. As for new garden space in general, I could mow my lawn to its lowest level, cover it with black plastic so as to kill the grass, and wait till fall? Or next spring?
If anyone has general advice, I appreciate it. |

| I do, but you need to water more than usual of course. I figure, if they could keep the plants alive in pots at the nursery, I can keep them alive in my soil. How much better in the ground than the pots, I say. As far as starting a new bed, I've never done it the way you say, but have read of others doing that way and getting good results. I just remove the grass by hand so I can plant right away. :) |

| its all about proper aftercare ... if you can be there every other days to check water.. and water if necessary.. it can be done anytime ... now that i am on 5 acres.. proper aftercare is a problem.. and i just put all my pots in full shade.. and hold them until proper fall planting time ... since planting all over 5 acres.. means things get forgotten and missed.. and usually not found until dead ... hydrenga is very water dependent.. and i would hesitate to do it at this time ... when all your pots are under one tree ... its easy to go out after dinner and remember to water them.. when they need it .. ken |
