bermuda grass or wiregrass in perennial beds

I am beside myself being faced with tons of what I think is wire grass growing in among my perennials. There is just too much to pull by hand. I had someone spray "fusillade" which is supposed to kill the wire grass and spare the perennials but so far nothing seems to be happening. Does anyone know what else I can do to spare the perennials? In one such bed I have a thick cover of cranesbill karmina which has been there for years but is now inundated with this wire grass. I hate to think that I have to destroy the beds and start over. Any ideas?

build a new bed ...

and start removing your favored plants.. cleaning out the entire root mass .. and plant them in the new bed...

when you finish removal.. go at the weed patch ..

and by next spring.. you can replant that bed with new stuff ...

in the alternative.. spot application of 100% roundup in the very expensive applicator at the link ..

there is no magic way to some a very big problem .... except either hard work.. or persistence ...

Here is a link that might be useful: the applicator form, not the brand name ...think dollar store

I wish I had a way of uploading a picture because I don't think you understand the scope of the problem. It is impossible to dig up an entire bed of cranesbill which is as thick as any plush carpet and try to separate the plants from the grass which has infiltrated everything. I wish I knew how this could have happened in one short year. Not having luck with ortho grass-b-gone either. Does anyone know how long it takes for the grass to die out after spraying?

Does the grass grow by runners? I have had the same issues in areas of my perennial bed. I put down newspaper and mulch this spring. It helped some. I have also used the ortho weed b gone. It did kill the grass I used it on. I recently read about using gallon of vinegar with salt and dish detergent but afraid it may kill plants.

Try this product, Over The Top

if the grass were growing BETWEEN the plants that would be one thing but this grass is mixed into the plants and therefore very tricky if not impossible to separate....have not heard of "Over the Top"....will try to check it out

A lot can happen in a year, especially with rhizomatous grass. Apparently there has been a border failure, load of seeds found its' way in, something. Knowing what it was would be paramount to preventing it from happening again or your eradication efforts may be in vain by next year.
