Tell me about your Bowman's Root

I don't think I read much about this plant (Gillenia trifoliata) on GW? I do not have any in my garden and I am intrigued by the variety "Pink Profusion". I also am further intrigued by the different aspects listed for it which lists various degrees of shade.

As always I would like to hear of your experiences and pictures are welcome.

RE: Tell me about your Bowman's Root

I fall sowed some seeds in 2012 using the winter sowing method and all of the seeds sprouted last year for me. Some of them even had a few flowers the first year. They all came back this year and look like they are starting to put out some flower buds. They are still rather spindly, so it may take them a few years to fill out. I'm using them as filler for when a patch of daffodils dies back and as background plants for hostas. They are in a mostly shady spot on the east side of the house. I'll get around to taking some pictures later.

Love this plant. Flowers at a time when the garden is between Spring and Summer in zone 5. Also has gorgeous fiery orange Fall colour. It is not bothered by any insects in my garden. I have a clump in part sun and one in mostly shade. Both do well and flower but the clump in part sun grew much faster and is double the size of the mature shade plant. Sorry no pics.

Thanks Karen and 'tgs'. I picked up two "Pink Profusions" this past week. I will try one in sun and one in a little more shade.

(How large do your plants get?)

These are my second year plants from seed. As you can see they need some bulking up, which will happen with time. A few are producing flowerbuds.

RE: Tell me about your Bowman's Root

This afternoon we went to the garden center where I thought I had got the Spigelia a few years ago. They didn't have any - but they did have Bowman's Root! So I got one to try... Now the question is where to put it! I'd like it to be in the front garden were it'd be seen more often but there's not too many places there that would suit its needs. I think I might try it on the north or east side of the garage where there we moved some hostas this spring. I think it'd look good with those.
