(Oops spelled deer wrong in the subject not not sure how to fix it..) I think... deer ate my coneflower! This is not an area that is visited by dear often, and yew right next to it is fine, so I am confused.... What do I do? Do I just prune it back? Can it still flower this year? I just planted this in May. Also I don't know what is wrong with some of the leaves. Help!!

I bet it was a rabbit. Rabbits visit my garden and I have noticed they seem to LOVE liatris and coneflower. I lost a liatris because the rabbits kept eating it down to a nub, but the coneflowers have always recovered. I would suggest trying a product called Liquid Fence. It is meant to be so putrid smelling that it makes normally yummy plants seem disgusting to rabbits and deer. You need to reapply it after every rain, but my experience has been that it has kept my liatris from being chewed down to a nub.

Pull the mulch away from the crown of your plant. You don't want to trap moisture at the crown. Pruning the plant like this can actually be beneficial and encourage branching.

Do you have a dog? Mine likes echinacea and keeps eating one plant almost to the ground. Just a thought, since it's so close to the house.

Rabbit bites are very sharp, as if done by a pruner. Deer bites tend to be quite ragged.

Based on what I hear here I bet it was eaten by rabbits!!!!!! We have regular rabbit visitors... and I see them around the yard and they are not afraid to come right up to the house at all. I wasn't sure how far off the ground rabbits can reach/eat because they seem pretty tiny... so that's why I thought it was deer. I thought it was weird because deer never come this close to the house and I never see them on this side of the house, etc. etc. I also have another new tickseed zagreb that is eaten to the nub every time it tries to leaf out.... I think that's pretty much done for the year. But great to know at least. We will look into liquid fence, and give it a little time to see how it bounces back. Thanks everyone!!
