Show Me Your Bloomers!

donn_
16 years ago

Let's see your latest greatest flowers!

Here's mine:

{{gwi:235941}}

{{gwi:235943}}

Aquilegia caerulea, AKA Rocky Mountain Columbine. Grown from seed in 2005, it provided only a few blooms last year, but is putting on a show this year.

It has clusters of blossoms down near the foliage, and solo high-flying ghost-like blooms as high as 3.5' off the ground.

{{gwi:235944}}

Whatcha' got?

    Sheesh, bean counter! You've got clematis and lilies and foxglove already... in zone 4??!! You must be in one serious microclimate, lol!

    Donn, I WSed the columbine caerula last year - no blooms yet. Why was I thinking the flowers were blue? It is gorgeous! As are your photos also, bean counter.

    A. caerulea comes in all sorts of colors. Annie's Annuals lists one called 'Krystal' which looks just like mine:

    {{gwi:235950}}

    There's even a red & white one called 'Red Hobbit:'

    diggerdee, blooms are a month ahead of schedule. Don't mind the early bloom but it looks like we are well into another drought. I hope I'm wrong but no rain since the end of April and temps in the high eighties.

    Ooh! Ahhh! Leslie, what is the name of that last iris? Very pretty. Oh darn, I just remembered I picked up some siberian iris at our local swap and they are still sitting around the house somewhere in a bag of peat moss. Uh-oh...

    I think the last Siberian Iris is Lady Vanessa. I bought this about 6 or 7 years ago. The lighter rose one is called Sparkling Rose, but IMO it pales along side this one.

    Beautiful flowers, Ladychroe. The photos are awesome. I can never take a good one pf Rozanne. My favorite geranium.
    Thanks for posting.

    If the is Niobe, I shall be quite mad, because I did not order Niobe last year since I already have one in another part of the garden.
    Thanks for responding.

  • ladychroe
    16 years ago

    I've noticed that, for all the discussion Rozanne gets on these forums, there are few actual pictures. Perhaps it's hard to capture that glowing purple/blue color.

    I had a heck of a time getting the colors right on the red climber. They are a deep magenta but kept shooting hot pink. I think I finally got it close with a little help from Photoshop.

    pitimpinai, great photos! Is that feverfew in bloom now, or are those pics from last year? I'm looking forward to my feverfew (thanks for those seeds!) and I'm disappointed even more now after seeing your picture that the allium christophii didn't germinate. :(

    I love your mix of foliages. I especially love the foliage on that geranium. Also, I've been racking my brains to try to remember a lily I have, and I think it's Orania, now that you mention it!

    :)

    16 years ago

    Thanks. All these are in bloom in my gardens right now. Come to think of it, that lily might be Peach Pixie, Dee. Orania is supposed to be an orientpet. That one is definitely an asiatic.

    I am sorry the Allium didn't germinate for you. I tried WSowing it last year, they came up fine. I was too impatient to wait for them to grow, so I just planted 100 more bulbs. lol.

    The feverfews are this year, Dee. They crosspollinated like mad. I don't even know how many different forms I have anymore. Here are some more. They'll look great in your white garden, Donn.

    Jessica~ Which variety of Coreopsis is it that you have? It is GORGEOUS!

    Beautiful pictures, everyone!

  • diggerdee zone 6 CT
    16 years ago

    Ooh, pitimpinai, those feverfew are beautiful! Especially the last photo. I do have some you gave me that germinated - can't think of which ones off the top of my head.

    And even funnier, I think I have Peach Pixie too! It's in bloom now, and I think that's the name of it - definitely "something" Pixie. I don't know why I have such a hard time with my lily names. Everything else I seem to record better. I think that I think I'll remember the lily names...

    One more thing - at what time of day do you photograph your blooms? How do you get it so dark in the background so the flowers pop? Is that done "in post" as we used to say when I worked in the TV biz?

    :)
    Dee

  • pitimpinai
    16 years ago

    Thanks, Dee. I can send you more Feverfew seeds this fall. I like to spread them around and have a great time finding new strains everyyear. They are so cheerful and easy going. Johnny jump up is another favorite.

    Yeah, Peach Pixie or Buff Pixie. I rarely remember my Lilies except those distinct ones such as L. regale & regale alba, Silk Road and Scheherazade. I planted my stuffs anywhere I could find a spot, so I never know what I planted where. lol.

    I usually take my photos early evening right before sundown or when it's overcast. Full sunlight bleaches the colors. If I can get up early enough, I will take photos before the sun reaches over the tree line too. I don't know enough to use any software. These are photos straight from my camera. I under expose a bit so the lines, colors and forms will show better. My camera makes purple or pink more blue than it acutally is. I don't know how to compensate for that.

    pitimpinai, it's so funny (again) that you said "yes, Peach Pixie or Buff Pixie", because when I first saw your photo, I thought hey, that's Peach Pixie... or is it Buff Pixie? So I guess whatever it is, we each have it, lol!

    I hesitate to add to this thread, because it's so big it's already loading slowly! I have a lot of great things growing, but this one is unusual since I don't know anyone else growing it. Got the seeds from Thompson and Morgan about eight years ago. It's Lavatera tauricensis. It's been blooming well for all of June and will continue all summer and into the fall. Last year, it just kept blooming its head off till frost, even though it was simultaneously producing seed! Don't know how it does that, but it does.

    In fact, I shared some of these seeds with you, Donn. Did it work for you? I sprouted some this year, but I expect they won't flower till next year.
