What is the name of this dianthus? - PIX

I would like to know the name of this dianthus. Would also like to know the dimensions of its height/width. I was told it was a perennial, but wonder if it is only a biennial.

Thanks for your help.

Love the color combo you have there!! Do they have fragrance? Seems like the fragrant ones survive my wet winters better.

In my climate of western WA they can overwinter several years as long as I have good drainage. 12" or larger pots kept on the porch overwinter well then I can move them back out into the sunshine as long as I keep them in pots off the ground because rabbits nibble....

I don't know how they do in your climate, but you can try & easily replaced as bedding plants in spring.

Looks like my Sweet William dianthus barbatus. Very pretty! Here's a pic of mine for comparison:

Oh, I forgot to add--
I know mine come back every year but I also heard from where I bought them at Bluestone Perennials that they reseed, so maybe I'm just getting the reseeds?
I haven't noticed a fragrance at all.
Mine stay pretty short at 8 inches tall to 12 inches on some.

Very lovely bed and love the color combos! Is that sweet alyssum I see? :)
I just bought a bunch this year for my annuals bed. My friend from work says that allysum will reseed and I'll never have to buy another one! lol

I think I actually found the name of this dianthus - guess I didn't look hard enough before. I am keeping a chart on all our perennials - we have probably 100 varieties and most likely around 1000 plants in our yard. My chart is several pages long :) Anyway, I guess this must be "Ideal Violet hybrid dianthus". Apparently it is supposed to get about 10-12" high and about 12"wide. Questionable if it will winter. I am not going to pot it over the winter - way too many plants to take care of. It either makes it or it doesn't. Hope it does, though.

This combo is in a planter situated around our patio. It is surrounded by purple salvia merleau blue [sage], white sweet alyssum [will be interested to see if it overwinters] and yellow osteospermum hybrid yellow symphony. Only one that has any fragrance is the sweet alyssum.

Also have huge concrete pots nearby filled with purple and yellow calibrachoa which spill over the edgs and seem to complement the planters well. I have tried several plant combos over the last few years and this one is the most pleasing. Think I have finally found a "keeper".

Thanks for sharing your pix, kentstar.

Nice talking with you both. Hope that last two months have not been as soggy for you all as it has for us.

That is such a pretty combo. I love how the salvia makes the blue undertones in the Dianthus standout.

It's a cross between D chinensis and D barbatus (Sweet William), hence the resemblance. But it is an annual, not perennial.

I find that some of the D. barbatus x D. chinensis hybrids do overwinter here and behave as short-lived perennials.

I buy many dianthus that are labeled annual, as often they will overwinter here. I think part of that is because they are so often mislabeled!
