Help! What is wrong with my geum?

Posted by kentstar 5b NE Ohio (My Page) on

It looked great all spring and bloomed beautifully, then it started getting brown patches all over the leaves. The leaves turn crisp and die.
How can I get rid of this? and what is it? A fungus? Insect?

did you have the 100 degree days a week or so ago????

i have hundreds of affected plants.. from conifers to grass to hosta to shrubs.. to trees.. all showing what i call scorch ...
it simply could not pump enough water on those really hot days to protect the tissue ...

i am really surprised to see it on conifers ... see link

Here is a link that might be useful: as an example

I don't think it's scorch. It's the only plant showing this pattern of damage.
It does get a lot of sun but has never had a problem with that in this zone.
I forgot to mention it's a geum Fireball.

geum need good drainage and dryer conditions than we receive herein N.E. Ohio. They do best for me when I plant the crown about one inch above the ground.

It is in a raised bed already, about maybe 4 to 5 inches higher than the ground level, a sort of "mound" if you will lol.

After losing all of the Geum and Delphiniums I planted the first year I gardened, a local Master Gardener told me they are considered "cool season perennials" and quite literally fry in our Oklahoma heat. Another lesson learned. :-)

did you or did you not have the heat wave????

i have one conifer.. in one corner.. and another 500 feet away.. both with scorch.. its not cultural ... its not every plant.. its just odd plants that could NOT handle the heat ...

it got fried at just the wrong moment in spring .. which is a few weeks later than norm.. because may was so cold ...

but if you dont believe.. i am hurt.. lol ...

did you ever plant the gutters like i suggested????

ken

ps: it sorta like hardening off ... the lush spring growth ... was still in cool days/cool nights mode ... and they were not ready for the blistering heat of those few days ... and how hot is was at night ... which is usually when plants can recover .... who knows..

Ok,ok ken! lol
I believe!

Yes, we did have somewhat of a heatwave about 2 weeks ago. Got into the 90's here. Then last week we had a couple nights in the upper 40's! So, the ups and downs could do that.

Plant the gutters?
You mean the spigot project from the annuals post?
No, I didn't.
