Dividing yucca

I know many people regret ever planting the plain green yucca f. but I love the variegation on 'color guard'. I have a nice clump, I dug up a side shoot and replanted it and now it practically looks dead. I did the division early spring but the yucca hates me for it. Is there a better time to do it? Is there some trick to it? I've done it before in the spring and even though the divisions survived it seemed like two years until it recovered, but I can't imagine fall or summer would be better times of year to divide.
Any good experiences? Maybe someone did root cuttings successfully and that's better than division? Any ideas appreciated :)
