 o
spiderwort - what's going on?

Hi everyone, I was hoping one of you experts out there could diagnose my new spiderwort. I just bought this plant a couple of weeks ago and it had one yellow spot on a leaf, which didn't seem to be a big deal. Since planting it, though, it has become covered with the spots. It looks almost like rust except I don't see anything actually on the leaf or under it, like I have seen "rust pustules" on hollyhocks etc. It's the leaf itself turning yellow. It's in pretty much full sun in a site that stays wet but the soil is not heavy. I've looked all over the web and most people say this a trouble-free plant, so what's the deal with mine? Any advice would be appreciated!

Tradescantia yellow leaf spot caused by a white smut fungus. They are working on using a different form of white smut fungus to use as a biological control of yellow leaf spot.

Honestly meant to add perhaps this is the problem. There are so very many plant diseases out there. This is my best guess.

contact the seller.. and ask if they have had the same problem with other stock...

if so.. they might replace it ... or even better.. give you something else ...

a lot of us hate this plant due to it seeding capabilities and invasiveness..

you might want to try the GW search engine for such info .. including under its latin name ...

"Smut fungus"... sounds awesome. Thanks, Patty and Ken. I wanted to try tradescantia out because we pretty much live in a bog, and it seems only the invasive survive here. But I'm going to take your advice and try to get my $10 back.
