| This seedling was given to me by my nephew's nongardening friend so she couldn't give me much helpful info. Story goes her grandmother was in the UK many moons ago and love this particular plant so much she brought one back in her suitcase. It is known that this plant reseeds and her grandmother thought it was beautiful.
Hoping you UK gardeners or anyone else might recognize the plant. I can see it is starting to get a bloom at the very top.
Thanks. |

Is it a Persicaria? Maybe Persicaria 'Golden Arrrows'?

With the shape of the flower bud, I bet you are right. I guess I won't have too long to wait. I planted it in a area I could easily remove just in case.

Is it an annual or perennial? If annual it might be persicaria orientale, usually called "kiss me over the garden gate".... But being you posted in perennials, well..... If the blooms droop, probably kmotgg, if they are upright probably some other persicaria. Nice story about how it came your way though. Much better than "I bought it at home depot"

I'm not sure if it is annual or perennial, but I know there are posters from the UK that frequent this forum.

If it is persicaria orientale (and they look like that to me), my grandmother grew these and they are wonderful! She called them "Kiss me over the fence". They are an annual around here, but grow incredibly fast. By the end of summer these would be 6 feet or more in her garden. I always thought they were so exotic with their huge leaves and tree-like appearance. It brings back some very fond memories. Kevin

My nephew did say she told him they got big! Can't wait.

It's an annual apparently and you are lucky to have got some. I have never seen it and according to the link it is not that easy to find in the UK.
Here is a link that might be useful: Persicaria orientalis

These are easy to find here. Here is a link to the variegated form.

Once you have these you should have them forever. They reseed freely - VERY FREELY. My grandmother would pull them out by the dozens in late spring when they germinated only keeping a few on the outskirts of the veggie garden. I'm getting excited now thinking of adding these to my garden next spring. I didn't think I had a spot for them, but I do. They should be grand. Nice to see there's a variegated form too. Kevin

Is the reseeding a huge problem? Or easily pulled?
