 o
Friend or Foe?

Found this growing in the sunny section of my hosta garden. I also found one in my front lawn, also sunny.

I have nothing else in my landscape resembling the palmate leaf this has.

I hesitate to pull it since it's so pretty.

Any idea what it is?

Isn't that poison oak? Yikes

No, not poison ivy. Not Virginia creeper, either. I know what it is tho but the name escapes me! Arrggh! And I'm not at home to go look in my garden! Not foe, tho-, wildflower. Or weed, depending on how you look at it.

Maybe somebody with a better memory can pinpoint it!

looks like a chestnut (aesculus hippocastanum) to me - I thought the US chestnut (castanea?) was in dire straits with some horrible blight. Those palmate leaves though - they really do look familar.

i thought chestnut also ...

if you pull it out.. or excavate.. you might find the nut shell ..

if it is .. all 5 leafs.. are really one single leaf.. if i recall right ...

Looks like Ohio's state tree, the Buckeye! aka horse chestnut. If you don't mind an 80 ft. tree, let it be. Otherwise... ;)

could be one of the shrubs too - I have Aesculus parviflora, Bottlebrush Buckeye, and I love it. It gets big: 15' by almost as wide but for shade it is lovely. Beautiful texture and flowers.

An Aesculus, but not hippocastanum. You could try the Name the Plant Forum or the Tree Forum for further input.

My Rodgersia aesculifolia has identical leaves.
