'Husker Red' Penstemon vs. 'Purple Emperor' Sedum

Hi

I'v got a small bed on the east side of my house that gets morning sunlight unitl around 1pm or so. I already have 'Karmina' geranium, rudbeckia 'Goldsturm', 'Moonbeam' coreopsis and one 'blackbird' asiatic lily planted there. I have space for two more plants, and I have already purchased the 'purple emperor' sedum due to the foliage contrast and fall blooms. But I've been thinking of 'Husker Red' Penstemon instead. What are the pros/cons of these two plants? Would the sedum get enough light there, or is the penstemon a better gamble?

I already have two 'Autumn Fire' sedums which look a lot like the 'purple emperors', and I wanted to plant something different, though the emperor is frankly really beautiful.

I love Husker Red Penstemon! It's an amazing plant which is very winter hardy. I started with one last year. I have rooted cuttings in water and they root so easily! The stems are so dark. The white blooms this year were awesome. I saw hummingbirds after them.

Purple Emperor Sedum does have nice color, but it doesn't seem as tough as my other Sedums. I've been disappointed in mine so far, but that's because my Sedum "Matrona" is doing so good compared to it.

I also just got Penstemon "Dark Towers." It is like Husker's Red but it's even darker and has pink blooms instead of white. I'm rooting cuttings of it in water too. You can't go wrong with these Penstemons. It's the plant I recommend to everyone I can.

I personally think the Penstemon would perform better there.

I second the penstemon. I have Huskers Red in a number of places, including a small bed on the east side of our house, and the color is good everywhere I site it.

I don't care for penstemon. I had Husker's Red, which was lovely in foliage it's first season, bloomed great the following spring, then the foliage was a mess. I don't do ratty/messy/lanky foliage.

Sedum foliage always looks good to my eye. I don't have Purple Emperor, but I do have Matrona and Brilliant. Matrona is greyish-green with reddish edges, light pink blooms - very pretty and a great performer for me. Brilliant foliage is plain light green, probably not what you're looking for, but lovely nonetheless.

Purple Emperor is very prone to root rot and needs excellent drainage and full sun. Penstemon HR is much more forgiving.

"I don't do ratty/messy/lanky foliage"

Really, mxk3? Your HR was lanky? Mine are always full lush plants, almost like a robust phlox.

I don't clean up my gardens until spring, and the overwintered foliage looks pretty crappy until I see enough new growth to cut out the old stuff, but I've never had ratty-looking foliage on the current season's growth. If I ever did, HR would be outta my garden tout de suite, because I like tidiness too.

Yes, the foliage on the HR I had was a mess...

My HR foliage is never ratty or lanky. Not spectacular either, more of a background/filler plant.

My Husker's Red Penstemon isn't ratty either. It could be a location/zone difference though. Here in Zone 7 the plant remained a purple color all winter. It never died down like most perennials. I was pleasantly surprised.

If you plant that Sedum make sure you increase drainage. I, too, have seen its issues with rotting.

I am so pleased to find out what Penstemon I have!! I thought that's what it was and didn't know which penstemon it is. Mine is also beautiful, but needs fertilizer. What do you suggest? i'd love a response. Aren't the leaves and stem beautiful nestled in with green perennials!

I grow both sedum purple emperor and penstemon dark towers. Sedum has been in the same spot since 2005 and has been an easy care plant. I planted the penstemon last year. It doubled in size and flowered from late May though early July.

To my mind, the plants are very different in effect. The sedum is short, 18 inches tops and flowers mid to late summer. It has a very heavy look.

The penstemon is around 2 feet tall and when in bloom is even taller. It's a medium plant in terms of shape and foliage appearance.

Overall, the sedum is darker.

I happen to think both are great plants. Both are growing in amended clay soil in full sun. Pictures below were both taken June 22.

Between those two plants, I would choose the 'Purple Emperor' Sedum. It has a darker coloration than the Penstemon, which seems to 'green out' soon after it flowers.
Penstemon 'Husker's Red': Is a good plant, not fussy. Adorable flowers. Good filler plant. It isn't lanky for me, nice and upright. -Do you guys find that it puts on new growth after cutting it? Mine never does, which means the cut stems are left exposed. Not very attractive. It also greens out, which I also don't care for.

Sedum 'Purple Emperor': Good color that doesn't fade out. Is attractive for a long time since it blooms later in the year. Not fussy once established. I agree that it isn't the most vigorous of Sedums. But if it has an area with good drainage it should do well.
Both are good plants in thier own way. But if I had to keep only one of them it would be the sedum.

-echinaceamaniac, thanks for the tip about the Penstemon cuttings. I will have to try that.

a2zmom -- Can you please tell me what the green, feathery plant behind the sedum is (first picture)? I've seen it and like it but don't know what it is. Pardon my ignorance, I have a predominately shady yard so am trying to learn more about the sun-lovers. Thanks very much --

It looks to be one of the threadleaf coreopsis.
