Need help with planting bareroot ferns

I got some fern roots at Walmart, and I can't make heads or tails of them. I don't even know if they're still alive. I know I'm not supposed to bury the crown, but if I don't know which way is up on these, much less what the crown is, how can I plant them? I'm wondering if I should just throw them away since I'm obviously not going to plant them right, and I suspect they're dead anyway...

Help please!

When in doubt, plant then horizontally. If the plant is still alive, it can sort itself out.

I don't remember what kind of plant I received that advice for, but it certainly made sense. Possibly ferns.

Thanks! That's what I'll do...

The problem with buying bare root plants this late in the season, especially from big box stores, is that they are usually either dried up dead or barely alive. They practically give them away near the end of the season to get rid of them. A lot of novice gardeners don't know what the bare roots of plants should look like. If bought it recently, I would take it back for a refund if possible.

Might be too late, but it helps get them going if you can soak the roots in water for about an hour before planting and then water well once they're planted.
