 o
Pennyroyal confusion

I'm having trouble figuring out Pennyroyal. Within the US there only seems to be one version of Mentha pulegium. That is Mentha pulegium 'erecta'. Despite the quotes I don't think it is a cultivar per se. This is the version of Pennyroyal that grows or tends to grow upright to 12" or more.

The other version has weaker stems that droop and then creep along the ground as the plant grows. I've seen this referred to as Creeping Pennyroyal, Dwarf Pennyroyal, M. pulegium 'nana' or M. pulegium 'Cunningham'. Pennyroyal with this habit of creeping stems (instead of just creeping rhizomes) no longer seems to be commercially available in the US. Which is strange if what I have read is true.

I now can't find the page of course, but it stated that when you plant a bunch of M. pulegium seeds some will develop the creeping habit and some will stay upright. This would imply that Creeping Pennyroyal cannot be reliably grown from seed. Maybe it can't even be reliably grown from cuttings. Can anyone confirm or deny this? Does anyone know what the situation is with upright vs creeping Pennyroyal? Has anyone grown it from seed and found that some percentage of the plants developed the creeping habit? I ordered a bunch of M. pulegium seed. So I guess I can test the theory myself. Germinate 100 seeds and see if any of them develop into the creeping version.

I would like to source some Pennyroyal that already has or will develop the creeping habit, but the only sources I can find are in the UK and so far only one of those will ship internationally. How long can a plant survive without sunlight or water? If it arrives "dead" can I still grow from the root?

RE: Pennyroyal confusion

Richter's in Ontario has one they call 'Carpet' and list it as M. p. 'Nanum' Would that work for you? They also have one called 'Spice Ball' that appears to be a creeper, but don't give much info on it.

They also have some other pennyroyals. And, they do ship to the U.S.

Here is a link that might be useful: 'Carpet' Pennyroyal at Richter's
