All my heucheras survived the past several winters, both those in the ground and those I over-wintered in 1-gallon plastic pots on my breezeway. That statement includes both dark 'Palace Purple' as well as a no-name green-leafed variety I grew from seed via winter sowing.

While I'm a zone warmer than your Z5, I'm located in north central CT and our winters are severe. I even had Baptisia australis/false indigo die back to the point it's barely showing this year but I blame that mostly on voles & devoutly hope it makes a full recovery.

Heucheras have been happy little campers in my part shade beds ever since I planted them. I love their gorgeous foliage, leaf shape, color and reliability. I consider them an absolute necessity and mainstay in my part sun/part shade beds. The fact they're maintenance-free, and require nothing from me but admiration, makes them cherished specimens in the garden.

Every Heuchera has stayed nice, even in winter for me.

For the most part, mine have overwintered well, although I don't grow too many. I do sometimes get a kind of frost heave, especially on my Silver Scrolls, but they seem to recover for the most part.

Woodyoak, it would be interesting to find out whether the nursery does grow green ones and they didn't survive, or whether they just don't grow them.

I really haven't had any problems with overwintering Heucheras, but this spring the majority of them looked like absolute crap. I thought maybe this was the winter that did them in, but I was amazed at how fast and lush they grow and fill in once the weather warms up.

I did have 2 casualties however. 2 green leaved, no name varieties I've had for years. Both were seed raised from a T&M seed packet mix.

mmmmm, I fight a ceaseless battle against vine weevils which simply love both the heucheras and my auriculas - am almost at the point of giving up as nematodes are expensive and a bit unreliable.
