Help with my epimedium?

I got an all-green epimedium at the plant swap, planted it in my shady bed (it gets filtered light in the afternoon), and have been keeping it relatively moist. Today I noticed that some of its leaves are turning a light, almost colorless brown in areas -- I would have thought maybe it was scorch, but I don't think it gets enough sun for that...? I guess it could get direct sun in patches for a small amount of time, but would that be enough? It hasn't even been very hot here since I planted. Any ideas what it could be/what to do? Thanks!

It could just be transplant shock. Just keep it well-watered and mulched thru this first season.

But look closely. Could it be the new leaves emerging? These are often the color you describe and will turn green as they mature.

Thanks! No -- it is definitely not new leaves. About 1/3 of the mature leaves are showing this. I will keep an eye on it. I hope you're right and it's just transplant shock -- I already love this guy and want more epimediums (epimedia?)

Epimediums are great plants. If you want to go to the source, google Garden Vision. It's a very spare web site, but there will be a phone number or some way to order the catalog. Darrell Probst, the epimedium man, ran this operation until he turned it over to someone else a couple of years ago. All his fabulous epimediums are still available.

What happened to Darrell Probst? He was long the guru of epimediums.

Darrell Probst has been hybridizing Coreopsis and has a number of terrific cultivars. You can buy them through Garden Vision and some are available from other retailers.

I only have three of them, under a maple where not much else grows...and far away from my hostas. I get that beige dotty discoloration on some leaves, too, jayco. Not sure what it is.I thought epimediums were disease free, that is, until I read a post on hallson's site that talked about TRV (tobacco rattle virus) that almost all epimediums get...and they can transfer the virus to hostas! I don't think mine have it, although, they can carry the virus and not show symptoms for a while. These are expensive for perennial plants, and I was put off when I read about the TRV.

RE: Help with my epimedium?

Hmm, Anitamo, it's not really dotty, it's more like most of the leaf is just sort of beige and discolored. I am hoping it's just transplant shock because I really like the plant.

RE: Help with my epimedium?

Oh, jayco, I wasn't really thinking that yours has the virus. And mine haven't shown any symptoms either. It was just a comment for future use...but I hope you won't need it. LOL.

RE: Help with my epimedium?

Uhoh. I planted some epimedium last fall. Should I tear them out? I have so many hosta near by and I would hate to spread a disease to those! I never heard about TRV. Should have been paying closer attention, I guess.
