What is this Idyll stuff?

I'm talking about these very long threads over on the Conversation side of this forum. They're numbered and into the 500's. Every once in a while I take a look, but they're so long and it almost seems to be a somewhat of a private conversation amongst friends or something. There are also a lot of names I don't even recognize. I never stay long.

Just curious...

Kevin

I can't figure them out! I saw them when I first joined GW and never really bothered to TRY to figure them out, lol.

The Idylls are a long-running conversation between a group of very avid gardeners. I was relatively late to join the group. It was a bit intimidating to jump into the conversation, but they were very welcoming to new-comers. Those who live near each other get together in person sometimes, and there is usually an annual 'Idyllunion' get-together. I never went to one of those but did meet a number of the Idylls in person when they happened to be in this area. One lady lives not too far away and we have become friends - we regularly dog-sit her dog when she travels! Unfortunately Facebook has killed the Idylls on GW as the conversation has moved over to FB...

I'm just curious as to how these posts were named. Aren't idylls poems?

Personally, I believe Facebook has killed Western Civilization, but that's just me.

These must have started ages ago. I checked the archives on the conversation side and the oldest Idyll they list is still in the 200's. That's a long time to be talking.

Dee - I wasn't around when the Idylls began, so am not sure of exactly where the name came from, but I suspect it used Idyll in the same sense that the original Greek poems did - i.e. descriptions of every-day life in the small intimate world of friends, family - and garden. :-)

Kevin - I quite agree re FB! I'm not sure how far back the Idylls go - some of the people who started them dropped out for awhile during busiest times in family life and then, years later, returned again. It was a great, interesting group and, not being a FB kind of person, I'll miss them.

I don't think I've ever looked at the conversation side of any garden web forum. I have made friends on other forums that I have talked too for years and met in person, some many times. :)

Not a facebook or Idyll type of person. For me that is way too much personal information to put on the Internet.

I love to talk about gardening though!
