Where I can unload waste (Ken - can you help?)

DH's project is removing all the lava rocks from around one of my patios and replacing with pavers. Sheesh, I didn't think he'd get the mess cleaned out in one day! (in the 90+ degree heat, no less...I'm impressed). So now I have a wheelbarrow full plus Hefty bags full of lava rocks that I need to dump plus pea gravel from the dog pen (um, that's my job to replace that every year). Normally I would just put a few light bags out to trash every week, but there's too much to get rid of in this manner by the time I'm having houseguests in a few weeks, so I need to drop it off somewhere.

No clue where to take it. Should I call a few local landfills to see if they take drop-offs from residents?

Does anyone in SE Michigan know of a landfill/facility that will take the stuff? Don't mind driving a way (within reason) to get the heck rid of it, it's already irritating me and it's only been a day.

Thanks!

Agree - Craigslist free has been a godsend for me since I manage several properties and tenants are always leaving crap behind. I see people posting piles of scrap wood, rocks, etc. I even got rid of a pile of asphalt shingles the previous owner left behind at this house. They were in great condition, but there was a 2 foot pile of them. What the heck was I going to do with them? I posted them on CL free and they were gone within 3 hours! (Someone in town was building a chicken coop.)

Someone who needs fill. Someone who's doing work with septic systems. Maybe no one!!

You'd be surprised at what people need. Who cares if the rocks are dirty...they're going to get dirty anyway! RE: the pea gravel...just make sure you let people know where the pea gravel came from, as it will be unsuitable for some applications.

Any recycling centers or architectural/construction salvage yards in the area? Very little of this kind of stuff goes to waste around here......someone will want it and often will pay for it as well!! Craigslist is a great suggestion, too.

I need several pieces of broken concrete to finish a path and I just looked on my local Craig's List and found someone with a pile for free.....off to dig for nice flat ones

"i wouldnt invite strangers to my house.. but whatever ... "

It all depends on where you live, and your personal comfort zones. I'm far more irritated by all the waste in our lives today than concerned about having people I don't know in my yard. I've actually made some wonderful "gardening friends" because of craigslist (just like I have through Gardenweb), have a lifetime of pots to plant in and gotten materials for my projects at greatly reduced prices (and sometimes free), been able to help others, gotten rid of excess stuff that still had useful life but we didn't need/want anymore...
In general, in our area, Craigslist is an affirmation of the desire and willingness to help others. Not saying there's never a scam, but there's certainly far more good than bad...again, I'm talking our area.

LOL Ken - I didn't mean I wanted to drop it off at your place! Just thought you might know of some places in this area.

Re strangers: Don't you open your gardens up to tours every year? (something to which I've never gotten an invite BTW....)

My comfort level varies. I'm leery of Craig's list, to be honest - when there's some sort of scam/crime/murder, often the connection was Craig's list. Yea, I know the % is very small, but I just have a bad overall impression/bad vibe of Craig's list. My SIL uses Freecycle all the time, she has folks picking up stuff from her often, she's never had any trouble. As far as I know she leaves stuff on the porch/driveway, never let anyone from Freecyle inside her home, though.

I've met up with people through various boards over the years, nice to get together with folks have been chatting with for years. :0)

DH suggested I call the township and see if they can give me names of any places that will take the stuff.

Probably the type of folks who are checking out the free landscape rocks and other garden goodies on Craigslist aren't your typical murderous type. I wouldn't be too worried.

first off.. anyone who will take dog poop covered rocks.. is strange to begin with ...

second .... though most gardeners are a bit insane.. i can deal with garden freaks.. its the poop freaks that bother me ...

third ... anytime you are out this way ... hidden lakes is only 10 minutes away ... and 4 minutes to charming tecumseh ...

bring hubbie.. he can see the need for therapy.. before you turn into the gardener i have become ... lol ... he can see the far reaches of what garden insanity can bring on acreage ...

I called my trash company, they won't take it. I called a landfill in my area, they will take the debris (for a fee, of course - but worth it to me to get the heck rid of it). DH will have to load up the trunk and haul it out there - he was bugging me about finding a way to get rid of the stuff already, so he won't moan about having to do it, it's bugging him, too. The lava rocks aren't poop covered - they were around one my patios. It's the pea gravel that is a bit...odiferous - which is why I replace every year and give the pen a good scrub-down (somebody's gotta do it, and DH won't go anywhere NEAR canine body fluids/waste).

Might take you up on the informal invite one of these years, Ken - but touring a garden is also something DH won't do, so will have to bring one of my gardening buddies if I ever meander out your way :0)

I see why Ken's opinion and the Craig's List Murderer might influence you, but you are certainly making things complicated for yourself.

As for the u & s on rocks, just go hose them down or pour a few bucket fulls of water with bleach over them and I think you've covered your liability for illegal transfer of environmental waste.

RE: Where I can unload waste (Ken - can you help?)

I have interacted with dozens of people through Craigslist - people picking up something free, people buying something, or prospective tenants, and have yet to talk to or meet anyone who caused any difficulties. It's really no different than any other advertising or classifieds, just happens to be greatly facilitated through a free website. Of course people have quirks, that may or may not be apparent from a brief meeting. That doesn't make them axe murderers. (Probably, the people who really are axe murderers, hide it very well anyway.)

I greatly admire the founders of Craigslist, they are providing an invaluable service, facilitating the functioning of millions of people's lives, and saving many useful items from the landfill, all for free! They could be Internet billionaires, with a fancy website that nickeled and dimed people to death (a la eBay) - but they have chosen to operate the way they do.
