| Hi all! My best friend's mother has given me a part of a perennial from her garden, it was in her grandmother's garden and has been passed down. They call it a heliotrope but the leaves arent right for a heliotrope. Its a very light pink/white with umbel flower areangements, and pinnate strap shaped leaves. It has a fragrant spicy/anise-y smell. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!! |

| Had to go out in my garden and look at my white valerian and it sure looks like what you have there. Mine isn't short tho, it grows about 6 or 7 feet tall. |

| Yes - my valerian, too, gets about 6-7 feet tall but when mine was just a little thing it grew out leaves that stayed pretty low like a hosta and had just one lone flower stem. It looked a little silly and then, the next year, shot up to 7 feet tall out of nowhere. Anyway, my vote is for valerian. To me, the blooms have a faint apple scent but its kind of muddled. |

| I too was given one by a friend, and I loved it for its attraction to pollinating insects, its statuesque flowers and its scent. However, I ended up removing it since I am not great about deadheading, and it self-seeds prolifically in my garden. It took me about 5 years of vigilant removal of seedlings to be free of it, so if you don't want lots, be sure to remove spent flower heads. |

| Second picture: also known as Valeriana sambucifolia. Tall, fragrant and, as per nhbabs, found it too much of a reseeder. Got rid of it. |
