I wanted to plant some brunnera ( Looking Glass) that I ordered as a border in front of a hydrangea bed. Can it handle the afternoon sun of Northern Va? How much shade CAN it take and still bloom? I have all possibilities of light available. I just do not know where the best site would be.

| My brunnera Jack Frost is growing in full shade and it blooms profusely every year. I have it at each end of a bed on the north side of my house where it gets a little early morning sun but no direct sun except a little just before sundown.

They certainly can't handle afternoon sun in zone 6A. Morning yes. And since they bloom when the trees are leafless, they can take full shade if it's light shade--dappled, for example, as in a woodland.

Up here - brunnera fry in, (a) too much sun and/or (b) conditions too dry. I can't imagine brunnera being very sun tolerant in Zone 7. Perhaps morning and/or evening sun, but if they can't handle afternoon sun up here well, they certainly won't be happy in your stronger sun. Crispy brunnera are not attractive...

Re dryness: My woods are very dry in summer. B. 'Jack Frost' didn't tolerate it at all, but the straight species and 'Langtrees' (one of my favorites though not common now) have done fine for many, many years.

Ok, You have definitely convinced me...Definitely do not need hot afternoon sun, and not in dry woodland setting. Thanks so much :>)
