 o
Eupatorium Chocolate sun preference ?

I have one that is maybe 5 years old. It is thick and leafy, but has never grown more than 18 inches tall. Maybe 2 feet when blooming. It also does not bloom as abundantly as those I see in pictures. This is planted against the house, so it is in full shade until early afternoon, and in dappled shade the rest of the day. When I looked up it's requirements, full sun to part shade was listed.

I got another one recently. Should I try to find a location with more sun to maximize it's potential?

Yep, needs more sun. I have mine in almost all-day full sun and they perform beautifully. They only get ~2.5 tall or so, though, perhaps 3' max.

Ditto above. Eupatorium in general is a full sun plant. As for the flowering habit of 'Chocolate', it can be hit and miss depending on your region, etc.

I have about 5 or 6 of these plants, they are located in a range of mostly sun to mostly shade (2-3 hours sun, whatever that is). They are more floriferous and have better color in sun, but even the ones in mostly shade grow well. I love this plant!

I have not been impressed with the color of mine. I was guessing more sun would enhance the purple color. I will try to find the new one some sun, in whatever sun I have left! Which is not much.

Do you folks treat it more like a perennial, or like a shrub?

Mine is on the north side of the house and gets a little sun in the morning and again in the late afternoon with shade the rest of the day. Mine does fine. It flowered like crazy last year. It dies back to the ground here.
