Replacement for Japanese maple

I think I'm going to have to call it on one of my laceleaf Japanese maples - absolutely no sign of life yet, not a single leaf. So, I need to replace it but not sure with what. I had another Japanese maple bite the dust in this spot, so I think it's best to avoid another one (I have JM's in other locations and they perform well, so who knows what's going on here).

The area is part shade, and I'd like something small-ish, not over 5-6 feet, preferably in a tree form like the JM. I was thinking a virburnum standard - ? - but I would miss the shot of color in this spot. Would a black lace elderberry work? Even if that isn't in a tree form, it would give me the finer, colored foliage, but I'm worried it won't do well in part shade.

How about a new house? That would solve the problem LOL!
