Replacement for Japanese maple

I think I'm going to have to call it on one of my laceleaf Japanese maples - absolutely no sign of life yet, not a single leaf. So, I need to replace it but not sure with what. I had another Japanese maple bite the dust in this spot, so I think it's best to avoid another one (I have JM's in other locations and they perform well, so who knows what's going on here).

The area is part shade, and I'd like something small-ish, not over 5-6 feet, preferably in a tree form like the JM. I was thinking a virburnum standard - ? - but I would miss the shot of color in this spot. Would a black lace elderberry work? Even if that isn't in a tree form, it would give me the finer, colored foliage, but I'm worried it won't do well in part shade.

How about a new house? That would solve the problem LOL!

Yes, I would agree, one of the dark leaved elders would be a good substitute (although there is always Rhus typhinus laciniata). There are a few cultivars of sambucus nigra - some of them are better in semi-shade than others - ask on the shrub forum for specific cultivars. Do you have some verticillium in your soil (I have this too and can no longer grow cotinus or redbuds).....if so, you will need something which is not susceptible to this fungal wilt.

I moved my black lace sambucus to a part shade area this spring. Too soon to know how it will look at the end of the season but is growing well and looks good so far. It also has to cope with the neighbors wide reaching maple roots.

I think the darker leafed Sambucus cultivars will typically "green out" the more shade they are put in. 'Sutherland Gold' is very toothy (not as "lacey" as BL) and does part shade well.

A little lacey Birch? I am growing increasingly fond of Betula pendula 'Trost's Dwarf'. Mine is in full sun, but I've read it can take some shade. Wonderful golden fall color too. Reminds me a bit of certain JM's. I'm training mine to be more tree-like than shrubby, as it is most commonly grown. Will reach around 4 (or more) feet tall.
