Foxglove Deadheading

I have read about deadheading foxglove, but I don't seem to understand. Do I just pinch off the seed pods and leave the bare stalk? Also, someone else in the neighborhood has foxglove that grew really tall. When it was done blooming they cut it back. Now it is reblooming. How do I get mine to do that?

Pinching off the seed pods will extend the bloom, but it's a pain getting the individual pods and in my opinion the long bare stalk with just a few blooms looks a little awkward and tired. Cutting the whole stalk down to maybe 8 inches might give you smaller new stalks, but only if the plant is growing well and gets plenty of water.

Cutting off the old bloom stalks is also a way to encourage the plant to stick around for another year and not die, since the most common types tend to grow as biennials.

I cut the entire thing down to ground level as soon as the capusles open and disperse seeds. Watering and fertilizing then brings fresh new growth, and possibly a few blooms but not like the main spring show.

I had many lovely Foxgloves this spring, and they have all either been pulled or are cut down to about 6-12 inches and completely deadheaded. I leave only a few seedpods to collect seed from certain plants. I'm hoping a few will come back for a 3rd year, but they are pretty rusty and crappy looking. I start new plants from seed every year and plant the seedlings in a few gardens to hopefully get some good plants the next Spring.

Sometimes when they are flowering I remove the lower seedpods while they are still green, so the plant will put it's energy into flowering.

When they get real tall and lanky they look weird, and I would cut them down even sooner, but the bumblebees just love the blooms! Here's one patch starting to bloom -

I cut the entire stalks off to almost ground level and shake the seeds where I might want more plants.
