I was wondering if anybody out there could help me... In some gardens I've seen this very dark, deep purple lavender. I'd like to get this particular one for my own garden. The internet and my local nursery advised me to buy Hidcote Blue, which is supposed to be the darkest lavender, so I did. Now that it's in bloom, I realize it's not the one that I wanted. A garden not far from my place has this darker, deeper purple lavender - and it is darker than all the hidcotes I've seen - but unfortunately she doesn't know the name of it. It's especially the calyx that is darker/deeper in color, the little blooms (corolla?) are slightly darker than Hidcote. Does anybody here know which cultivar(s) could be darker and deeper in the color than Hidcote? Thanks for any advice!!

If no one here knows, you could contact someone at Well Sweep Herb Farm (http://www.wellsweep.com/). They propagate, grow and sell 85 different kinds of lavenders, so they would definitely know! If you're ever in NJ, it's an astonishing place to visit. I buy plants there every year.

a2zmom, I checked out the Well Sweep Herb Farm catalogue and was amazed at the number of varieties they sell. For someone wanting a special lavender plant, this would be the place to contact. janni_dk, please let us all know what you find out about the darkest possible variety.

Molie, it's not just lavenders, of course. Well Sweep sells close to 2000 different perennials, the vast majority they propagate themselves. It's a family owned and run business; the third generation now works there - I spent some time talking to their grandson who just graduated with a degree in plant biology. Truly a plant lover's dream nursery.

a2zmom, thanks for the tip! They sure have a lot of different lavenders. I will contact them to see if they have any suggestions. Unfortunately, I'm not able to visit their nursery - I live in Europe. I'll let you know what I find out.
